AIA Conference 2026: Key Architecture Insights from San Diego
Each year, the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design brings together thousands of architects, designers, and industry leaders to explore the future of the built environment. This year, Iconica Architect Devin attended the conference in San Diego, California, representing Iconica.
From sustainable design trends and emerging technology to international architecture tours and mentorship opportunities, the conference offered valuable insights that reinforce the importance of lifelong learning in the architecture profession.
Exploring Design Innovation Beyond the Classroom
The opening day was dedicated to architectural tours, including a visit to Fox Point Farms, an innovative urban agricultural community that blends residential living, local food production, hospitality, and sustainability. Designed around the idea of creating a walkable, self-sustaining neighborhood, the development demonstrates how architecture can support both environmental responsibility and community connection.

“It was fascinating to see a project where people can live, gather, and partially sustain themselves from the land around them,” Devin said.
The experience highlighted a growing trend in architecture: designing communities that prioritize wellness, sustainability, and a stronger connection between people and place.
Sustainability Continues to Lead Industry Conversations
If there was one topic that dominated the conference, it was sustainability.
Throughout keynote presentations, educational sessions, and conversations across the expo floor, architects discussed the industry’s responsibility in addressing climate challenges and advancing net-zero building goals.
“The number one topic was sustainability,” Devin shared. “The profession recognizes that architects are on the front lines of influencing how buildings perform, and there’s a growing push to accelerate progress toward more sustainable design practices.”
As clients increasingly prioritize energy efficiency, resilience, and environmental stewardship, sustainability remains one of the most influential forces shaping architecture today. These same priorities extend across many building sectors, including healthcare, education, and senior living, where creating healthy, efficient, and resident-centered environments is becoming increasingly important. At Iconica, those principles are reflected in our approach to thoughtful senior living design, where the built environment plays a critical role in supporting wellness, comfort, and long-term quality of life.
Learning from Global Design Leaders
One of the highlights of the conference was hearing from internationally recognized architects and thought leaders.

Devin attended a presentation by Shigeru Ban, the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect known for creating temporary structures from paper tube construction. Originally designed for disaster relief and emergency housing, many of Ban’s projects have become permanent landmarks because of their beauty, functionality, and innovative use of materials.
The conference also featured architect and urbanist Amr Abdalla, whose work focuses on creating vibrant, livable cities through thoughtful urban design and public spaces.
These sessions reinforced an important reminder: great architecture is about more than buildings. It is about improving the quality of life, strengthening communities, and creating meaningful experiences for the people who use those spaces.
Architecture Beyond Borders
One of the most memorable experiences of the week was an architectural tour of Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe, often referred to as Mexico’s wine country.
The tour explored Quatro Cuatros, a stunning development known for its contemporary architecture, vineyards, and dramatic landscapes. What stood out most was the creative use of reclaimed materials.

According to the project team, many of the materials used throughout the development originated from local salvage yards. Old boats, reclaimed wood, and repurposed materials were transformed into high-end architectural features and luxury residences.
The experience showcased how sustainability and design excellence can work hand in hand, proving that innovative architecture often begins with reimagining what already exists.
The Rise of AI in Architecture
Artificial intelligence was another recurring topic throughout the conference.
While many architects agree that AI is not yet capable of replacing the design process, attendees discussed how emerging tools are already improving workflows in visualization, rendering, and early design exploration.
“Architects aren’t using AI to replace creativity,” Devin explained. “They’re using it to generate ideas faster, create visualizations, and support the design process.”
As AI technology continues to evolve, its role in architecture is expected to expand, helping teams spend more time solving complex design challenges and less time on repetitive tasks.
Why Industry Conferences Matter
Beyond the educational sessions and tours, the conference offered something equally valuable: the opportunity to reconnect with the passion that brought many architects into the profession in the first place.
Like many design professionals, architects often spend much of their time balancing budgets, schedules, client needs, and project deadlines. Conferences provide a rare opportunity to step back, learn, and be inspired by the work of others.
“You can get caught up in the business side of architecture,” Devin said. “The conference gives you a chance to be a student again, celebrate great design, learn from other professionals, and recharge your passion for the work.”
Supporting Continuous Learning at Iconica
At Iconica, we believe investing in professional development strengthens both our team members and the clients we serve.
Through continuing education opportunities, industry involvement, and conference attendance, we encourage our architects and designers to stay connected to emerging trends, evolving technologies, and best practices across the profession.

Devin’s experience at the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design 2026 is a great example of how ongoing learning fuels innovation. The ideas, relationships, and inspiration gained during the conference will continue to influence projects, conversations, and design thinking long after the event concludes.
As the architecture industry continues to evolve, one thing remains constant: the best design solutions come from professionals who never stop learning.
