Meet the Team: Susan Sowatzke

What is your name? Susan Sowatzke

How long have you worked at Iconica? Three years

What is your position at Iconica? Chief Financial Officer

What led you to accounting and construction?
Initially, I began college with the mindset that I would graduate with a computer programming degree. Not long into the semester, I realized that computer programming was not for me and switched to an accounting major.

I’ve always enjoyed the construction and real estate industries. Every deal is different due to changing laws, taxes, people, and regulations. The work at its core often remains the same, but the flavor of each of the transactions changes.

How did you get into the construction field?
I started in out in manufacturing and then ventured over to the real estate and construction industry.

Where did you go to school?
I received an associate degree at Northeast Wisconsin Technical Institute, a Bachelor of Accounting from Lakeland College, a Masters of Taxation from UW-Milwaukee, and I am currently entertaining the idea of taking some law classes. I am very logical and have always been intrigued by the practice; it would apply in many ways to finance and accounting.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Like many other jobs at Iconica, every day can look very different for me. Some days I may be working on closing the monthly books, running a cash flow forecast, preparing next year’s budget, or training other employees. I enjoy taking something complicated and breaking it down so that other people can apply a task to their duties and problem solve on their own. If we don’t disperse our knowledge, no one else can grow.

What type of music do you listen to in the car?
I have eclectic taste. I often match the music I choose for my mood, but usually, you can find me listening to jazz, ’80s, or classical.

What would you do if you weren’t an accountant?
I would love to be an artist, specifically a fiber artist. And I’ve always been intrigued with being a part of the Air Force flying planes.

What have you been a part of, here at Iconica, that you are most proud of?
I am very proud of our budget and forecasting tool that we use monthly. It helps us make decisions and foretell the future.

Favorite Pop-tart? Frosted strawberry.

Cold or hot? The correct way, of course. Cold!

Favorite dessert?
A decadent flourless chocolate cake. It’s very dense, very thin, and oh so delicious.

Dream vacation?
I love to go camping so I would say somewhere in a national park and somewhere where I can hike and enjoy the view (preferably with water).
