Your name: Hector Edgardo Rivera
What do you do at Iconica?
I am Iconica’s Field Operations Manager. I manage the drywall, paint, and steel stud production at construction sites. This includes estimating, specifying, purchasing, figuring out labor costs, and overseeing the construction work. I also run the labor groups which entails coordinating all the construction under the project scope. I travel to our construction sites every week – checking on production and productivity.
How long have you worked here?
What is something most people do not know about you?
I was a DJ all throughout high school and college when I lived in Puerto Rico. I am also a great cook.
What do you love about your job?
I enjoy the interaction between the office and field. In my position, I get to work with all employees. If I have a question on a project, I can walk over to the Architect on the project, then walk over to the Structural Engineer. I can get my questions answered within 20 minutes. At another company, it might take a week to get the answers.
What led you to the construction field?
I come from a construction family. My grandfather was a mechanical contractor, my uncle an engineer, my mother worked as an accountant for construction companies, and my father was a production manager at a window and doors company. Growing up, I always loved doing side jobs with my father which ultimately led me to my first real job: sweeping floors.
What is most exciting about your job?
Seeing the project completed after all the work that goes into constructing it (especially when the project is completed on time).
How has the industry changed since you started?
Technology. We do not have to carry a pack of prints anymore!
What are some of your favorite Iconica projects?
New Perspective Waukesha – It is a large, challenging project. Since it is such a large project, I have been able to see all trades working on various parts of the project at the same time.
Prior to joining the Iconica team, I had the opportunity to work on a once in a lifetime project – the Fiserv Forum. It was a megaproject.
Favorite song to sing in the car?
I sing everywhere but what I am singing depends on the day. Some of my favorite music includes Hispanic music – salsa, merengue, or rap.
What would you say to someone considering working with Iconica for their project?
Iconica is a great company. It is a very client-oriented company, which I have not seen often in my many years in the industry.
I want to see the midnight sun in Alaska.
How do you stay on top of construction trends?
YouTube – you can find all sorts of construction-related trends and techniques on YouTube.
Best advice your father gave you?
Never lie. Say the truth.
If you were not in the construction field, what would you be doing?
Agriculture. I have a minor in Animal Science.
What does a regular workday look like for you?
Considering I am a morning person, as soon as the sun is out, I am up and ready to go. Typically, I am out on the road around 6:30 am. I make visits to our construction sites to make sure the crews have their goals for the day and have the materials they need. I usually head back to the office in the afternoon where I can catch up on estimates, meetings, emails, and phone calls.
What is your favorite food to cook?
I love to cook pork! Ribs, pork chops, BBQ and more. Being from Puerto Rico, no special occasion is necessary to cook my favorite food. Any day is a good day to eat pork or BBQ!
