How long have you worked for Iconica?
What was your first position here?
What do you do now?
I am one of two Architectural Directors, managing the architectural department. One of my primary responsibilities is staff mentoring and growth.
What led you to the design field?
My father and grandfather were both in the construction industry. I always enjoyed visiting them on their construction sites. My father would show me blueprints and ask me what I thought was interesting about them. This led to my interest in architecture.

What are some ways architecture have changed since you started?
Software and technology are the vehicles for creating architecture, which in turn changes how we work on planning and designing buildings. It has helped us refine our designs and better convey ideas to our clients.
What was your favorite project to work on?
Keylime Cove Waterpark. I had designed previous waterpark projects, but this one I felt like I was really able to apply that knowledge and give a greater impact to the users and the owners.
Most glamorous part of your job?
Getting to meet many different people and learning what they value.
Are you a morning or evening person?
Evening – but slowly becoming a morning person the older I get.
What is something you look forward to every day at work?
Sharing ideas, creating something new and special with people I respect and enjoy.
What are some of the benefits of Iconica integrated team atmosphere?
The advantages of our teams is that egos are checked at the door. Everyone can bring ideas to the table. Everyone can ask questions within or outside of their discipline. People truly work together without fear of being vulnerable, can work together for solutions and strive to deliver on the project.
Externally, I can look a client in the eye and tell them I am helping them get the best value from their dollar. We also make our clients part of that team when they are at the office or on the jobsite. Clients feel we listen and understand their WHY.
How does that set Iconica apart for clients?
Our methods and dedication set us apart. It’s not a single designer or project manager carrying the torch. It’s an entire team. We make sure everyone understands and commits to it from design, estimating, construction, project assistance and so forth.
What are the most important values you demonstrate as a leader?
Listen to everyone’s opinion and balance that with goals of the project.
Mentoring and encouraging personal growth among my coworkers.
What music/radio station do you listen to in the car?
Anything that plays 80s music or the band, Rush.
How does Iconica support you in your career?
They have supported me by giving me the time and freedom to explore things that interest me. They keep me challenged and always encourage me to become better.
Do you have a mentor?
Everybody can you teach you something.
How do you encourage the development of your team?
During monthly meetings I spend a lot of time talking about their hopes and aspirations and help tailor their goals to help them succeed.
How do you stay on top of architecture trends?
I am an active member of the AIA and subscribe to numerous journals. I also like to travel and see what has been built and designed in other parts of the country or world.
Do you have a dream project?
Any project that makes a difference for the people that use it. Every project has some challenges, but when there is a true meaning it becomes more personal and rewarding.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Scouting, travel, and spending time with my family. I have camped over 150 nights with my sons and the boy scouts.
How do Iconica’s values come into play when working with clients?
Values show our true character: We are in a trust-based industry and the values are our absolutes. They are unbending and if we are truly living those values, we will earn our client’s trust.
